Read This; I Quit, I'm Done, It's All Over

My schedule has just gotten way to hectic to keep up with all of the FAU sports.

Following every game and every event, I just can't do it anymore.

Some people that CAN do it are at FAUSports.com. FAU has multiple media members, which I work with for setting up interviews and the like, nearly on a daily basis. They do a great job so check them out.

I also want to give a little love to my ex-Palm Beach Post guys Marcus Nelson and Chuck King. They have a great website called FAUOwlAccess.com. Even though they are some what a competitor of mine, we're all in this here together and talk at all the games so it's not like we're enemies.

Stick it to the Post for trying to demote you to High School Sports, I love it. No disrespect to the Post because I understand the budget cuts, but I love seeing people stick up for what they believe in.

By the way, I want to do a little survey here. I signed up on the google analytics sight to track visitors to my blog but it seems to be down. It says no one has checked this out in over a month, and I have a couple of people who have told me they looked at it since then so I know there's a problem.

So, if you are reading this, write me a comment. Say as much or as little as you would like, I just want to know someone is looking at this. And I'd appreciate much more comments from here on out.

If you have any suggestions on improvements, feel free to give me your opinion. I've been working hard with Owl Radio, Owl TV, the University Press, 790 AM the Ticket on the Sid Rosenburg Show, Broward County delinquent tax section, plus my Multimedia Practicum that I take in Jupiter in order to graduate with a BA in Communications, and I take constructive criticism to the heart and love learning how to improve my craft.

Oh, yea, that's right, that wasn't a mistake, they make us drive to Jupiter to graduate. I live in Fort Lauderdale. It's a great experience working for a newspaper outside of school where I will have articles printed, but needless to say it's not the most convenient drive.

Anyway, thanks for your time. I'll get on some more interesting topics here more often instead of just updates. I look forward to the comments.

P.S... Click on those three google ads links on the top left if you'd like. It helps you find out sporting news including tickets, or what ever the advertisement says...plus it helps me out in the cash department.

Swimming, Men's Tennis, & Women's Track Updates

Swimming

The men's and women's swim teams will be in Gainesville to face UF tomorrow. I hope the pool's heated or indoors because it's going to be freezing.

At FAU's last meet the women came in second and the men in third.

Men's Tennis

The men's tennis team plays a double header in Tallahassee tomorrow. The first matches are against FAMU starting at 10am, then comes FSU later in the day.

The women are off until the 22nd when they face FIU at Patch Reef Park in Boca.

Women's Track

FAU's only track team, there is no men's because both genders need the same amount of sports for equal opportunity and there's no women's football, start their season off this weekend at the Dempsey Indoor Meet in Washington.

No Leadership for Owls Men's Basketball

"What's disappointing at this point is we haven't found anybody that will step up and lead us," says head coach Mike Jarvis after FAU (4-14, 0-6 Sun Belt) couldn't come through at the end against rival FIU (7-12, 2-4 Sun Belt).

The 58-53 loss to the Golden Panthers was just the latest late game collapse the Owls have faced this year.

They've been close in nearly every game, but they just don't have anyone that can make that big bucket to close out a victory. Not even against the hated cross town rival in FAU Arena on "Bury the Burrow in Red Night."

Carderro Nwoji looks like he wants to be the guy, but his hot early game shooting tends to cool off in crunch time. Jarvis says it's due to the aggressive defense he plays throughout the game tiring him out towards the end.

There's Paul Graham III, but he hasn't been putting up the points when it counts most. Last night he had two late game opportunities but missed them both. "You got to make those baskets. He put his name in the draft last year. We're going to find out if he's good or not between now and the end of the year," says Jarvis. Hopefully that statement puts a jolt in him.

Then there's Carlos Monroe. Oh, wait never mind he's not out there playing. He's on the sideline and has only played six of the eighteen games this year.

Then there's Xavier Perkins. Oh, wait he's not even with the team anymore.

Then there's Sanchez Hughley. Oh, wait, he hasn't played all year.

One positive is there's always next year and Jarvis knows how to recruit. He's got some good freshman playing now in Alex Tucker and Shavar Richardson and a bench body in Nick Gagel. Gagel has a nice three point shot, but Jarvis doesn't have the confidence to give him many minutes just yet.

There's four recruits that have verbally committed that look promising. I'll get to those in another blog.

It seems like this year is going to be Jarvis' worst season record wise. He's still confident and says, "We're not here for the season, we're here for the reason and that reason is to build a strong program. We're going to get to the point where year in and year out we are competing for the Sun-Belt Championship."

We're still waiting for that here in Owl Country. I know Jarvis is a religious man and has faith. Well, In Jarvis We Trust.

Wear Red Tonight!

Part 2 of Bury the Burrow in Red is tonight. Now, it's the men's turn.

Make sure you wear red! I suggest if you see someone not wearing red to pinch them like it's St. Patrick's Day and they're not wearing green.

Here's the breakdown for tonight's rivalry game:

FAU (4-13, 0-5 Sun Belt) needs to focus on FIU's Freddy Aspirilla. He's a freshman that stands at 6'10". That's bigger than any of our players. He's nearly averaging a double-double this season.

Another big part of FIU's team is senior forward Alex Galindo. He's the Golden Panthers' leading scorer averaging 16.8 points per game (PPG).

FIU (6-12, 1-4 Sun Belt) will be focused on FAU's senior forward Paul Graham III, who is the Owls leading scorer averaging the same as Galindo, 16.8 PPG.

I think FAU's senior guard Carderro Nwoji will have another big game. He's scored over 20 points in two of the past three games.

FIU has the definite size advantage and that's something the Owls have had trouble matching up against this year. Look for FAU to play a lot of four guard lineups to keep the big men of FIU on the perimeter and off the boards.

FIU will be without 7 -footer Russel Hicks, who is sidelined with a stress fracture to his foot. He could have been the difference maker, especially with no Carlos Monroe, who is also out with a foot injury, his is called plantar fasciitis, for atleast three weeks for the Owls.

FIU leads the all-time series 12-9, but FAU has won when it matters most lately, defeating FIU in the Sun-Belt Conference Tournament in each of the past two years. Last year's Sun Belt battle was a blowout win for FAU, 91-64. No doubt the Golden Panthers will be hunting down the Owls for revenge.

I'm giving the advantage tonight to the Owls. FIU is winless on the road this year (0-8) and have lost their last 10 road games dating back to last season. And yup, you guessed it, FIU's last home win was in the Burrow against FAU. Still, the Owls play well at home and are 35-9 when playing at Boca in the last three years. FAU has lost their last two at home, but the fans should play a factor tonight.

Both teams have had injury issues on the year. This should prove to be one of the more exciting Sun-Belt games on the season, even without the two premier players Hicks and Monroe. The battle to stay out of last place in the SBC happens tonight in the Burrow starting at 7pm.

Bury the Burrow in Red Part 1; The Women's Turn

FAU trounced the FIU Golden Panthers in the first match up between the two this year.

The Owls (5-11, 2-4 Sun Belt) played their best game of the year with an overall great team performance.

Six players finished in double figures and the 94 points scored was the highest since the March 8, 2003 Atlantic Sun Tournament game against Stetson where FAU won 91-79.

Brittany Bowe was the Owls leading scorer with 20 points. She also had a career high 13 assists and was just three steals away from a triple-double.

Andrea Taylor scored a career high 18 points in the win.

It was 13-2 FAU straight out of the gate, and 51-33 at the half. FIU (3-14, 1-5 Sun Belt) came back to make the score respectable late, but were never really in the game.

The Golden Panthers struggled with keeping control of the ball, turning it over 20 times. The Owls had just 6 turnovers.

The win brings the Owls back in the Sun-Belt Conference race and moved them ahead of FIU in the standings.

Next up for the ladies is a trip to face North Texas on Saturday Jan. 16 at 6 pm. Live audio will be at http://fausports.cstv.com/.

Tonight is the men's turn. Here's what we're saying about tonight's game. Here's rival FIU's words on the game. It should be a good one tonight, even if it is the battle to stay out of last place in the Sun-Belt Conference.

FAU Safety Greg Joseph Makes All-Bowl Team

Senior safety Greg Joseph (left) earned a spot on foxsport.com's All-Bowl team for his performance in this year's Motor City Bowl win.

He was the second leading tackler for the Owls, behind senior Frantz Joseph for the season.

There's going to be some gaping holes in next year's defense. The young recruits of Schnellenberger will have to step up to the slate.

If the defense plays at least half way decent next year, I believe the Owls will be looking at a third consecutive bowl game.

The offense is still loaded with talent and the special teams has never been a problem.

With one complete year as a starter under Rusty's belt he should be filled with confidence.

Here's something to keep your hopes up for; Rusty's rating on NCAA '09 went up to an 87 for his senior season. Hopefully in real life he pans out that way.

What A Wonderful Weekend

My Steelers won! Defeating the San Diego Chargers for the first time in Pittsburgh in the playoffs.

You can just tell when Willie Parker is healthy, because when he is, he's one of the elite running backs in the league and he proved it again Sunday with 146 rushing yards.

Pittsburgh looks poised and ready for another Super Bowl run. The last team to win the Super Bowl that doesn't have a Manning at quarterback is the Steelers.

Problem is, they have to face the Baltimore Ravens, who beat the Tennessee Titans 13-10. The Steelers have already beat the Ravens twice this year, once in overtime and the other on this Santonio Holmes touchdown grab in the final seconds.

This will be smash mouth football at its best.

I was really pulling for those Titans for no other reason then that lasting image of a few of their players being sore winners, stomping on the terrible towel. I wish we could have stomped their Super Bowl dreams in the AFC Championship game.

Then there's the Eagles and Cardinals in the NFC championship game. If the Steelers win, it will either be a Pennsylvania Super Bowl, or Pittsburgh will face its ex-Offensive Coordinator Ken Whisenhut, who was just a Mike Tomlin hire away from being named Pittsburgh's head coach. What a match up it will be! And I'm heading to Tampa for it all!

If you listened to Owl Radio for the men's basketball game, that was Brian Rowitz on the play-by-play with myself doing the color commentary. It felt good, like that's what I'm made to do. Word is I'll be back at it for the women's game this Wednesday night for Bury the Burrow in Red.

With that Gators win Thursday night, then all my other festivities on the weekend, this should prove to be a good week.

Later gator...

FAU Men's Basketball Woes Continue

The most suspenseful part of each Owls basketball game is waiting to see who will actually be playing.

FAU lost to WKU and again were in the game late, but no depth caused the Owls to come up shorthanded.

Oh, and Carlos Monroe was out, this time for his ailing foot injury. He'll be out for at least three weeks, and has already missed 11 of the first 17 games.

Every game it's something new. Monroe's out, Perkins is no where to be found, and Hughley has a health problem. Then, there's Sammy Hernandez who has a groin injury and has been playing limited minutes.

Fifth year walk-on senior Chris Coleman started last game for FAU. Jarvis says that in these tough times they have a dart board with names on it and Coleman's name came up.

You know it's bad when the head coach is admitting he's trying everything and has resorted to starting Coleman, who has tried out and was cut the last three years and is an FAU band member.

Jarvis keeps reiterating that college basketball comes down to the first week of March and they need to string some wins together to get some momentum going into the conference playoffs.

The perfect time to start is against rival FIU Thursday night in the Burrow at 7pm. The Golden Panthers are one game ahead of the Owls, so this one will be the battle for last place in the Sun-Belt Conference. it's time to Bury the Burrow in Red, so be there and wear the right color!

Softball & Baseball Tickets Soon to be On Sale

Softball tickets go on sale January 26th. The season starts February 6th in Boca. It's a double header with the first game at 6pm against Massachusetts. The second game is scheduled to start at 8pm against Maryland.

Baseball tickets go on sale February 9th. The season starts February 20 in Boca at 6:30pm against Fordham.

Both softball and baseball season tickets prices have been nearly cut in half from last year.

Call 1-866-FAU-Owls or visit www.fausports.com for more details.

Lady Owls Tennis Lose First Event of Year

FAU lost it's first match of the year, falling 4-3 to Xavier.

Freshman Dominique Wimmer won her first collegiate tennis match of her career.

The lady's hit the court next to face rival FIU in Boca at Patch Reef Park at 1pm.

Buzzer-Beater Drops Owls

Back and forth all game, and it felt like whoever had possession last would win, and that's exactly what happened.

WKU dropped the Owls 79-77 on a last second 40-foot prayer by the Hilltoppers Amy McNear.

The loss handed out by WKU (9-6, 3-2 Sun Belt) leaves a bad taste in the mouth of FAU (4-11, 1-3 Sun Belt) as they get ready to play rival FIU Wednesday night at 7pm. It's the Owls Bury the Burrow in Red night, so don't wear the wrong color.

I thought our color was blue. The FAU color saga continues...

Men's Tennis Team Tops Defending Conference Champ

FAU handled Xavier 5-2 in this seasons opening tennis event.

First year head coach Brandon Stokes had the men ready to face last year's Atlantic 10 Conference Champions.

It's a big win in Stokes' debut.

The next challenge is in Tallahassee where they face in-state opponents FAMU and FSU this weekend.

I Have A Confession To Make

And my confession is....

Dun, Dun Dun Dun Dun...Go Gators!!

Yes, I'm a Gators fan and I've been one since I started liking football.

I'm not as obnoxious as most Gators fans, heck I even like the University of Miami, and of course my beloved FAU. Then there's others, like USF where my brother attends, Notre Dame because I'm Irish, then any Pittsburgh team because I love the hard working city, which I can't wait to visit here in the next couple months. There's nothing wrong with liking more than one college team, there's hundreds of them!

No matter if you love him or hate him, you have to admit Tim Tebow is one of the best, if not the best college player ever to live. And how can you hate him, he does freggin missionaries for crying out loud! Stop being a Gator hater, he's a great guy, but even with his spectacular performance last night I don't think he should have received the Most Outstanding Player of the Game Award.

The player of the game for me was the dynamic Percy Harvin. Hurt ankle and all he was the difference maker for the Gators throughout most of the game, giving their offense a much needed shot in the arm. Having Harvin, plus that great defense is hard to beat, even for Oklahoma's offense, which was one of the best all time.

Now, it's onto the weekend where my Steelers play the Chargers. Ben's head is swollen, but even with the Chargers on the roll that they are, I can't see them making the trip from the west coast to play in the cold dark night at Pittsburgh with either no or a depleted LT and coming out with a win against that Steel Curtain Defense.

Hopefully history's on my side, because the last time the Gators won the championship, the Steelers brought one home for the thumb in winning their fifth Super Bowl.

Small Lineup Strategy Nearly Pays Off For Owls

Head coach Mike Jarvis had a plan against the small roster of Middle Tennessee State (10-5, 4-0 Sun Belt).

He matched up by playing all of our available small guys a lot of minutes, and the strategy came 2.4 seconds from working.

MTSU defeated FAU (4-12, 0-4 Sun Belt) in the final seconds of the game. If that sounds familiar, it's because the Blue Raiders did the same thing against our football team this year.

Only seven players were in action for the Owls with only three big men getting minutes.

Big men Monroe, Royster, and Watson split time, with Monroe getting the most minutes with only 22. And yes, Monroe actually wasn't suspended for this one.

The four guards/forwards that played, Tucker, Richardson, Graham, and Nwoji, each played over 35 minutes.

I wasn't there so I can't tell the tale of the game first hand, but my guess is MTSU is a fast team and Jarvis felt we would get blown out if we played the slower big guys. I would have taken advantage of the size differential, especially since the Owls aren't a fast break type of team, but Jarvis' strategy nearly worked. I guess that's why I'm writing blogs and he's getting paid to coach.

It was a near upset, but in reality it's another bitter taste in the mouth of the now bottom feeding FAU Owls of the Sun-Belt Conference. The win gave MTSU sole possession of first in the conference.

Next up for FAU is conference opponent Western Kentucky, who just was upset by FIU and no doubt will be looking to rebound. The game's Saturday Jan 10 at 7pm in the burrow, right after the lady's game. I'll be commentating along with Brian Rowitz live on FAU's Owl Radio.

Swimming & Women's BBall Results, Men's BBall Plays Tonight, Men's and Women's Tennis Teams Play Tomorrow

FAU Swimming Teams

FAU's men's and women's swim and dive team's each came in second in this season's last home meet.

Several Owl seniors posted seasonal bests and won events in their last home meet of their collegiate careers.

The next meet will be Saturday Jan 10 at 11am in Miami. The men will be up against FIU, Iowa, and Purdue and the women will compete against FIU and Arkansas-Little Rock.

Women's Basketball

The lady's lost back to back nights. The first was Tuesday at Troy, then they got blown out Wednesday at Middle Tennessee State.

The lady's have a chance at revenge in the burrow later on in the year against both squads.

The next game for the women is Saturday at 2pm in the burrow against Western Kentucky.

Men's Basketball

The men play tonight at Middle Tennesse State. Be back tomorrow with results...

Men's and Women's Tennis Teams

The men's and women's tennis teams are in action tomorrow at 2pm at Patch Reef Park in Boca against Xavier.

Men's Owls BBall Continue Losing Trend, Once Again Shorthanded

Another loss and I have to tell you following this team is getting depressing.

I stayed away from football because I didn't want to fight for what games I could report on so I focused on the basketball team because I figured Mike Jarvis will lead this team to prominence, heck he's done it with every other school he's been with.

The team looked talented, and I still believe they are. Look at last night's loss to UM. They lost by 16, but were down just four with 13 minutes left in the game.

The late game collapses that have been occurring lead to one recurring factor. No depth!

Redshirt sophomores Sanchez Hughley and Xavier Perkins were what I was hoping to see as the 2 and 3 guards, but neither are expected to be playing anymore this year. Hughley because of a health issue, and Perkins for "academic reasons."

Hughley is 6'4" and so is Perkins. In their spot we have freshman's Alex Tucker, who is 5'11" and Shavar Richardson, who is 6'2". Don't get me wrong, Tucker and Richardson have played great this year, but that is 5 inches we are losing and 2 bodies off the bench. And we all know height and depth mean the world in college basketball.

Then you have Carlos Monroe, who missed 9 games to start the year, and was out again for last night's game. And again, they say for "academic reasons." To add he is our best re-bounder in school history.

FAU lost the rebound battle 47-29 last night. Tell me these three guys missing doesn't have something to do with it.

By the way, I hate the term "academic reasons." Want to hear the reasons for Monroe and Perkins' inability to play in games. I've heard Monroe was suspended last night because of missing an exam and that Perkins is out because his GPA isn't high enough to be eligible.

Jarvis never gives a straight answer when asked about his players absences. I understand protecting your players from negativity, but maybe if they were put out there they wouldn't make the same mistakes.

Still, I have faith in this depleted team and will be at all their home games on the sideline this year, and at the FIU away games.

Stay with me as these FAU faithful fans did last night at the UM game.

The next go-round is at Middle Tennessee State on Thursday Jan. 8 at 8pm. MTSU was picked to win the Sun-Belt this year and has a 9-5 record including being 3-0 in the Sun Belt. This could prove to be the longest season of Jarvis' career.

FAU Sports Brings in the New Year at the Burrow

The men's and women's basketball teams both played South Alabama on New Year's Day 2009.

Who ever scheduled these games had great manners because the lady's were first. The women defeated the Jaguars in dramatic fashion. The Lady Owls were down double digits in the first half, but came back to take a one point win.

A major difference in the game was at the free throw line where FAU (4-8, 1-1) was 16-21 and USA (11-3, 2-1) was a dismal 2-7. The result is surprising considering the disparity in the records.

The inspiring play of the women couldn't light a spark under the men's team, who lost to the Jaguars, and have now lost nine of their last 10.

It was FAU's first home loss of the season, and just their eighth in the last three years.

The major difference in the game was from beyond the arc where FAU (4-10,0-3) was just 2-13 and USA (9-5,2-1) was 6-13, including the Sun-Belt Conference scoring leader Domonic Tilford's 4-5 shooting from three point land.

The 5'10" senior point guard Tilford finished with a game high 27 points and taunted Owl fans with his ever present smile after each basket as some of the FAU faithful mocked his looks, calling him Sinbad.

Monroe scored 21 points in his first home game of the season, with Graham adding a team high 25 points.

Only seven Owls saw minutes in the game with more than a couple missing the game due to injury or personal issues.

Although FAU never led, they were down just one multiple times.

The Owls had possession down three with 32 seconds left in the game. Graham put up a three that missed, but FAU got the rebound. Nwoji followed up with a three point attempt with 4 seconds left that was blocked by Jaguars freshman CJ Garner, who then brought the ball down the length of the court to secure a 74-69 victory.

The next game isn't any easier for the men. They play Monday night at 7pm in Coral Gables against the University of Miami. The game will air on FSN and as always can be heard on 640 AM.

The women travel to play at conference opponent Troy on January 6 at 8pm for their next contest.
